Prof. Dr. Yves Surel

During the spring semester 2010 Prof. Dr. Yves Surel was the fifth THESEUS Visiting Professor at the University of Cologne. His professorship was carried out in cooperation with the Faculty of Management, Economics and Social Sciences of the University of Cologne.

Yves Surel is Professor of Political Science at the University Panthéon-Assas (Paris 2, France). He teaches also at Sciences Po Paris and at the Institut des Hautes Etudes de l’Amérique Latine (IHEAL) in Paris. He is currently member of the Council of the French Political Science Association (Association Française de Science Politique - AFSP) and in charge of the activities of one of its working group on public policies. He is also associate researcher at the Centre d’études européennes at Sciences Po Paris and at the Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches de Science Administrative (CERSA, Paris).In the past, he was Research Fellow at the European University Institute (Florence, Italy) from 1996 to 1998, Research Fellow at the Centre d’Etudes Politiques de Sciences Po Paris (CEVIPOF – 1998/2001), and Professor of Political Science at Sciences Po Grenoble (France - 2001/2008).

He is also member of the board of several journals, such as Politique européenne and Revue Internationale de Politique comparée. His main publications are related to comparative politics and to public policy analyses. Some recent publications are with Bruno Palier, Quand les politiques changent, Paris, L’Harmattan, 2010 ; with Yves Mény, Politique comparée, Paris, Montchrestien, 2009 ; with Bruno Palier, L’Europe en action, Paris, L’Harmattan, 2007 and with Yves Mény, Democracies and The Populist Challenge, London, Palgrave, 2002.

Course: Europeanization of EU member states

At the Jean Monnet Chair for Political Science at the University of Cologne he gave a course for graduate students entitled “Europeanization of EU member states”.

Inaugural Lecture: How to tackle the Greek crisis? A theoretical perspective on EU Crisis Management

In his inaugural lecture on 15 June 2010 Prof. Yves Surel reflected on “How to tackle the Greek crisis? A theoretical perspective on EU Crisis Management”. He integrated the current crisis into the scientific debate and evaluated it in the light of European integration theories.
